If your vehicle does not appear to have any power, it’s generally reasonable to assume either there’s a connection issue or the battery charge levels are too low; a jump start may be needed. Rarely, your car can also be having fuse, ignition, key, or solenoid issues, that’s known to produce this type of symptom (appears to be no power on the dashboard).

Your car's battery needs to be around 12 volts and provide enough power (called cold cranking amps or CCA) to start your engine. Just like your phone's battery, a car battery can still have some charge but not enough to work properly. For example, if your phone battery is at 10%, it might not be able to run certain features like the flashlight or keep a strong signal. Similarly, if your car battery is low, certain parts of your car might not work, like the engine starting.

We never use or recommend using jumper cables to jump start a vehicle. Using jumper cables to start a car can be problematic because it technically isn't a true “jumpstart,” but rather an attempt to charge. Jumper cables transfer a “charge” from one car's battery to another, rather than transferring “cranking power” to another battery. This method can often be unsuccessful because the electrical systems and battery cranking capacities of the two vehicles may not be compatible. If the donor car's battery is not sufficiently powerful or if there's a significant difference in the voltage or amperage, the charging process may not provide enough power to start the disabled car. Furthermore, if the car you're trying to start isn't experiencing a battery charge issue but rather a cranking issue, jumper cables become completely ineffective. This is because jumper cables merely transfer charge, not cranking power, making them inadequate for addressing issues beyond a dead battery.
